About this course

Outline Outline

This major will allow candidates to acquire essential knowledge and skills related to food security and associated land management sustainability, in relation to agricultural systems, aquaculture systems and food science. Food security will become of increasing concern into the future and there is an urgent need for food production and manufacture to become smarter. The program will cover the science and technology of crop and livestock production and food manufacture to achieve sustainable production against environmental constraints. Specific skills developed within the program include soil health and the use of alternative fertilisers, aquaculture food security and food product development. A research project in an area relevant to agricultural systems, food science and food security is an important component of the program.

What you'll learn
  • Acquire professional skills in sustainable management of soil, crop, livestock and food manufacture for food security, GC1, GC6
  • Acquire, use and contribute to new agricultural and food scientific knowledge and expertise relating to a broad range of professional situations informed by food security requirements, recognising the importance of continuous training and education, GC1, GC2, GC6
  • Students will be effective communicators of sustainable agricultural and food technologies and their integration for food security, GC3, GC4
  • Understand the global and cultural issues in food security and how these impact on the practise and management of farming systems and food availability, GC4, GC5
  • Appreciate the importance of cultural and individual human rights and how these impact on the study of food security in relation to sustainable agricultural production and food manufacture; embrace the diversity and opportunities presented by different cultures, value environmental, indigenous and other community perspectives, GC4, GC5
  • Work both as an independent scientist and within teams, either as a professional leader, or as a collaborator, using industry-relevant problem-solving and decision-making skills, GC2, GC3, GC6
